From BLIS Student to Full-Fledged Librarian
My journey in taking a library science course has been anything but straightforward, marked by challenges, perseverance, and a deep passion for learning. Growing up, I always had a love for books and knowledge, but the path to becoming a librarian was filled with obstacles that tested my resolve. As a working student, I juggled my studies with responsibilities at my uncle’s computer shop, a situation that challenged my time management skills and resilience.
Balancing classes, assignments, and my job was no easy feat. I vividly remember my typical day: waking up early to prepare for class, rushing to attend lectures, and then immediately heading to the library for my duty as library sttudent assistant.
Time was a luxury I couldn’t afford. I had to prioritize tasks, often sacrificing sleep or social activities to meet deadlines. On particularly demanding days, the exhaustion would weigh heavily on me, and I would find myself questioning my ability to keep going. Would I ever be able to finish my degree? Was I capable of succeeding in such a demanding field?
During this challenging period, I faced moments of doubt and frustration. The pressure to excel academically while also managing my other activities felt insurmountable at times. However, I found solace in music, particularly in the emotional strength with my Pluto Friends."
In addition to the support of friends and family, I found inspiration in the stories of successful librarians who had once faced similar challenges. Their journeys illuminated the path ahead, encouraging me to stay focused and motivated. The late nights of studying and the sacrifices I made began to feel worthwhile as I envisioned my future in the field of library science.
As graduation approached, the anticipation built within me. Finally, the day arrived when I walked across the stage, adorned in my graduation gown, filled with pride as I received my diploma. I graduated cum laude, an achievement that validated my efforts and sacrifices. I was also honored to be recognized as an outstanding working student, a testament to my dedication and resilience. This recognition wasn't just a personal victory; it symbolized the countless hours I invested in both my education and my job, proving to myself that I could overcome any obstacle.
Now, as a government employee at the University of Antique, I am not just building a career but also enriching my knowledge by pursuing a master’s degree at Cebu Normal University. Each day presents new opportunities to grow, learn, and contribute to the academic community. I am thrilled to be in an environment where I can engage with students and faculty, assisting them in their research and learning endeavors. The work I do is meaningful and fulfilling, as I help facilitate access to information and promote a culture of reading and knowledge-sharing.
The field of librarianship is vibrant and full of opportunities. With a growing need for information management and access, I am excited about the future of this profession. The demand for skilled librarians is on the rise, and I’ve come to appreciate the diversity of roles available, from academic and public libraries. Each path offers a unique chance to make a positive impact in the community and contribute to the lifelong learning of others.
Moreover, my experience as a working student has equipped me with invaluable skills that extend beyond academic knowledge. I have honed my time management, problem-solving, and communication skills—qualities that are essential in today’s fast-paced world. I’ve learned the importance of adaptability and creativity in addressing challenges, whether they arise in the library or in the classroom.
Reflecting on my journey, I realize that every struggle has shaped me into the librarian I am today. The late nights, the balancing act of work and study, and the emotional rollercoaster have all contributed to my growth. I am grateful for the lessons I’ve learned and the relationships I’ve built along the way. With determination, support from friends and family, and a commitment to my profession, I am excited to see where this journey takes me next.
As I look ahead, I am eager to embrace the opportunities that lie before me in the field of librarianship. I am motivated to contribute to the development of library services, advocate for literacy and information access, and inspire the next generation of learners. My story is just beginning, and I am ready to face whatever challenges come my way, knowing that each step will lead me closer to my goals and dreams.
